“Proper visualization by the exercise of concentration and willpower enables us to materialize thoughts, not only as dreams or visions in the mental realm but also as experiences in the material realm.” –Paramahansa Yogananda
So, what is creative visualization and why is it important?
So what is visualization? The Wikipedia defines creative visualization as the cognitive process of purposefully generating visual mental imagery, with eyes open or closed, simulating or recreating visual perception, in order to maintain, inspect, and transform those images, consequently modifying their associated emotions or feelings, with intent to experience a subsequent beneficial physiological, psychological, or social effect, such as expediting the healing of wounds to the body, minimizing physical pain, alleviating psychological pain including anxiety, sadness, and low mood, improving self-esteem or self-confidence, and enhancing the capacity to cope when interacting with others.
However, from my experience, creative visualization is a skill that has the capacity to do much more than that. Neville Goddard, the new thought author said Imagination is God and it is the only reality. What we see as this 3D reality is just the past images we have held in our mind and the current images we hold are what will create our future. We create our entire life by the images we hold in our mind’s eye. If you ask me, creative visualization is a life skill which should be taught in school. I have manifested many near impossible things within record time in my life by using the simple techniques mentioned in this article. Read on to know more about how to apply this amazing and simple tool in your life to create a life you don’t need a vacation from. For the purpose of this article, each time I mention the word visualization, I mean creative visualization, the art of creating your life.
If you watch any movie related to sports, you will see that the athletes first play the game in their mind before they even get on the field and play the sport in reality. Even now, mindset coaching and visualization is an integral part of a sportsperson’s coaching process. Whether you wish to win at sports or in the game of life, consciously or unconsciously you are using this wonderful power which is available to us all, should we choose to tap into this amazing world.
Whether you are trying to get rid of depression and anxiety, relieve stress, get better health, more, money, create better relationships, go on vacation, own that dream house, car, have a successful business, attract your soulmate or just be happy and fulfilled in life, there is nothing off limits for your wonderful imagination. The power of visualization is extremely underrated.
The important thing to remember on this journey, however, is to start small and work your way up. The reason being, if you are manifesting money and require it urgently, along with mental images of having the money, you also have mental images of what will happen if the money does not come and having two conflicting images pushes away the manifestation of your desires. Hence, it is advisable to begin with a simple desire like attracting a cup of coffee, which is not urgent or important, so that there is no desperation or conflicting image in your mind about the occurrence of the desire.
Before we embark on this journey, the first step is to get crystal clear on what it is that you would like to create, whether it is a cup of coffee or the house of your dreams. Do not worry about how it will come to pass, the synchronicities and serendipities of the creative process will bring your desire to you in the quickest, easiest, most magical ways. Most of the times, infact, almost every single time, I am amazed at the way in which the desires come to me in ways truly beyond my imagination.
3 simple yet potent Creative Visualization techniques
Here are three simple yet powerful creative visualization techniques to help you manifest the life of your dreams.
This is my favourite technique and one which has given me the most success. Think of a conversation which implies your wish fulfilled. For e.g. It could be you telling your mother or spouse or best friend that you wished for something and how it came to you with total ease and with hardly any effort and how happy you are now that it is fulfilled. Before you start the visualization, get completely relaxed. Sit in a quiet spot, focus on your breath and bring the mental image of the conversation in your imagination. Use your five senses. See the image, the smile on your face, the amazement on the other person’s face and as much detail as you can about the wish fulfilled, hear the words, smell the air, taste the success in your breath, feel the feelings of happiness, Visualize for less than 5 mins, once a day. That is enough. Do this every single day in the morning or evening. The time of the visualization does not affect the manifestation of the desire in any way. Have fun with this technique, you could make a list of 10 desires and use this technique on each desire for one minute. 10 mins a day to deliberately create the life of your dreams!
Using anchors in your visualization. This is a wonderful NLP technique to literally, as the word suggests, anchor in or fix your visualization. Ask yourself, how would you feel if your wish was fulfilled? The response for each could range from relief to euphoria. For e.g. If your wish is to clear an exam and get a passing grade, the feeling would be one of relief whereas owning your first car or your dream car would be one of euphoria. Whatever it is, all you need to do is get into the feeling state of your wish fulfilled and have a physical action back it like pressing your thumb and index finger together for relief, touching a certain knuckle for joy, holding your arm for surprise, and so on. The key here is to repeat the physical action multiple times until just doing the physical act triggers the said emotion.
This guided meditation exercise is simple and wonderfully effective. It is from the book Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain and in addition to the visualization, it takes care of the very important aspect of “letting go” which is essential for rapid manifestation and detachment.
Sit or lie down comfortably, close your eyes, and breathe deeply, slowly, and naturally. Gradually relax deeper and deeper. Imagine something that you would like to manifest. Imagine that it has already happened. Picture it as clearly as possible in your mind. Now, in your mind’s eye, surround your fantasy with a pink bubble; put your goal inside the bubble. Pink is the color associated with the heart, and if this color vibration surrounds whatever you visualize, it will bring to you only that which is in perfect affinity with your being. The third step is to let go of the bubble and imagine it floating off into the universe, still containing your vision. This symbolizes that you are emotionally “letting go” of it. Now it is free to float around in the universe, attracting and gathering energy for its manifestation.
There is nothing more you need to do.
These 3 simple techniques, if done regularly, are more than enough to manifest anything that you wish to create in and as your life.
